This is the second ultra run I have photographed, its already proving to be a great evening, the sun is out and there are great people around.
Only taking a chance to read the crew notes yesterday (Thursday) I found out where I have been told to photograph, thats up and over Skiddaw!! It will be the first time heading up there and hopefully with good light, although the weather suggests it could be a little wet so precautions have been taken to keep dry as well as warm.
Fully reading the route notes on Friday and cross referencing all of the information I need for a great journey around Skiddaw.
I’ve had my first and final cider, only having £3 with me wasn’t a great plan…
Feeling like it could be a long day tomorrow, early rise and then a hopefully dry walk up Skiddaw. Time for bed now, asleep in the hall to protect the cider ;-)
Its 23:05, time for bed, alarm at 5:25.
Woke up at 5:25, quick sort out before everyone came back in. A few photos while the competitors get ready. The start was good, then I ran to the front of the pack while avoiding everyone to get more start photos, turned out to be a little out of breath after that!
Headed to Latrigg, then had a little wait till the first runners came through. The first three went past pretty fast, it was tough going at that point up the first steep bit of Skiddaw with a 10kg camera bag. Having a few stops while heading slowly to the top, plenty of great landscapes to point my camera at. Hanging around at the top for a while and got the bell shots needed.
At the top the Inov-8 head tube worked well to keep my head bright and warm. Using a lightweight windproof was needed too.
From there it was a very steep decent but made for a few interesting shots.
Heading to the ridge, feeling it looked better from the too of Skiddaw, made the most of it though with some good angles.
After getting down the ridge, there were a few more miles of brisk walking with two competitors to the next CP.
From there I worked myself to the finish to catch some of them in the light remaining. Caught more runners in the dark and headed to bed, really tired after running around Skiddaw!
Up in the morning, seeing a few people hobbling around. The prize giving with Billy Bland was at midday so gave everyone a good chance to chill out before prizes and cake :-)
Travelling 13.02km with 2421ft of ascent and 2700ft of decent! An amazing event, well organised by great people!
